What We Know Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
At least 16 individuals perished and over 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.
The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who are known so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She told the events before the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
