The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate during his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core platform, did not confirm his residency plans immediately following his electoral win in November.

"My choice rested on keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing my complete efforts on implementing the platform on affordability the city's residents elected me on," Mamdani said on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: thank you for showing us the best of New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, it will forever remain within me and the work I do," he said.

Political Debate

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

But his rivals, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the affordable housing even though he is from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting far removed from his previous Astoria apartment.

With its cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, meaning the city imposes caps on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

City residents see such units as valuable lifelines as the price of rent outpaces the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
