The co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated how parent company Unilever stopped the launch of an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, that established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he will personally create the controversial flavor within an individual collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.

Longstanding Conflict Between Founders versus Corporate Owner

The recent announcement escalates the ongoing disagreement between the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods giant that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.

The co-founders have claimed how the parent company along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company from "maintaining its activist principles".

Watermelon Sorbet becoming a Symbol for Solidarity

Mr. Cohen stated through social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions regarding the product's name plus additional components.

“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”

This particular fruit has become an emblem for support for Palestinians because of its colors, which match those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.

Historical Social Engagement plus Current Developments

In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring their Israel business to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand which was first created several years back for endorsing former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".

Leadership Changes plus Future Intentions

The founder indicated how he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.

The announcement follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at the company recently, after many years with the organization, mentioning worries that its independence was compromised following corporate moves to curb its social activism.

At that time, Mr. Cohen stated how “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience leads me to keep working within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy so that it can actualise the social mission, the values that established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
