New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities released surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was projected as a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he attends every game. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
