The next most common nationalities to have vanished from each location are individuals from Afghanistan followed by Iranians.

Policy Shifts and Ongoing Concerns

In late 2023, after a protracted judicial process concerning lone child asylum seekers vanishing from all designated facilities, the custom of routinely accommodating children in hotels was deemed improper.

Instead, officials committed to enhance safeguards for these children by expanding the use of care facilities. After that judicial outcome an additional 44 children have vanished from these facilities, with 10 still missing and 34 recovered.
