A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block in the background helped us verify the footage.
Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the site of where the images were from relied on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
