Pick of the Week
The Substance
The filmmaker's daring satire tackles the demanding standards for women's appearance as well as the dreaded aspects of advancing years. The veteran actress delivers a masterful portrayal as Elisabeth, an aging celebrity demoted to starring in a fitness program on TV. Edged out due to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out an enigmatic and gruesome procedure titled the Substance. This produces a new version of herself named Sue, leading to an increasingly vampiric relationship between them. This Friday, Paramount Plus
The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

Presence Film
Steven Soderbergh pushes his film-making abilities with this nifty ghostly tale filmed completely through the eyes of the phantom. When a household featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their recent residence, the lens – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. Chloe seems conscious of the supernatural presence, and it looks like defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. October 11th, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema Premiere
This Self-Referential Film
The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom in this meta comedy caper. He acts as an egotistical Hollywood actor playing himself who takes on a million-dollar gig to attend a celebration at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Recruited by government spies to spy on the potential kingpin, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, evening, Channel 4
The Black Phone
The director's locked-room horror holds up well despite the lack of a follow-up. Located in 1978 Denver, a series of kidnappings has rendered the local kids anxious. When Finney is kidnapped by the villain and locked up in a dungeon, he fears the worst. However, the old telephone on the wall continues to ring, with spooky callers providing assistance, and the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. An effective horror. October 11th, late evening, on Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for Mammon in Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic of the disgraced TV preacher and her criminal husband. The actor plays the venal Jim, who declares at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye begin capitalizing on the people's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, yet Jessica Chastain manages to depict the character with compassion. October 14th, early morning, the Film4 channel
