Crew Member Shares Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also carried high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and years of training to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
A Path to Recovery
Months following achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She noted that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The computer-piloted spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The diverse crew also featured leaders in various fields.
The company behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
