In a significant move for their rebuilding roster, the South Side team have officially added Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract bringing in the high-profile player.
Deal Structure and Incentives
The contract features a substantial signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside compensation of $16 million for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the following year.
Additionally, Murakami's final-year pay can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- $1 million for winning the MVP award.
- Half a million dollars for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
- $250K for ranking between fourth and tenth.
- An identical bonus for winning the ROY honor.
The agreement also stipulates that he will not be optioned to the minors without his permission and allows him to become a free agent at the end of the contract. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and airfare between Japan and the U.S..
Compensation and Historical Context
As part of the transaction, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of over $6.5 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows get a 15% cut of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.
Murakami will become the fourth-ever Japanese-born to play for the White Sox, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami while both were in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 soon, joins a promising lineup in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a last-place season, finishing at the bottom in the AL Central but representing a notable improvement from the previous campaign.
The winner of back-to-back Most Valuable Player honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he hit 56 home runs, eclipsing the single-season record for a player in Japan formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.
His last year was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Even with fanning 64 times, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.
Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 career batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in 892 games. Early in his career playing mainly at first base, he has spent most of his time to third base.
WBC Heroics
Murakami's big-game performance were on center stage during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a victory-sealing two-base hit that drove in teammates for a dramatic 6-5 win. The next night in the championship game against the Team USA, he hit a equalizing homer in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's subsequent title triumph.
The power hitter is slated to be unveiled at a press conference on Monday.
