Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
