A Number of Affected as In-Flight Disturbance Impacts Delta Flight into Sydney, Australia

Several people sustained injuries when a Delta Airlines jet traveling from LA to Sydney, Australia experienced significant turbulence this past Friday.

Delta Flight 41 "encountered brief turbulence" as it touched down at Sydney Airport, a company official informed. Several cabin crew members were injured.

Local paramedics reported they treated a total of five people, and transported three to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that included pain in the back and headaches. Those affected ranged from their thirties and seventies.

The event represents the most recent case of commercial jets experiencing severe turbulence, with experts saying that global warming is a major factor.

The aircraft was carrying 245 people and fifteen staff members on the wide-body jet, the official noted, clarifying that the plane touched down "safely and normally" at the airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on Friday morning.

The NSW Ambulance Service said they were alerted just three minutes before the plane touched down, and ambulances were waiting on the tarmac.

The reasons turbulence is growing increasingly prevalent - and more severe.

Last year, 25 people were hurt when another Delta jet, flying from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, Netherlands, experienced "severe" atmospheric disturbance just a couple of hours into the transoceanic journey, and diverted for an emergency landing.

In 2024, those on board on a Singapore Airlines flight went through a frightening five seconds period of extreme instability. A traveler lost their life and dozens were injured, as unbelted passengers rose out of their seats and were slammed back.

In-flight turbulence is a common occurrence while flying, and while occurrences of significant turbulence seem to be rising, they are still very rare.

Research indicates that there are an estimated five thousand cases of severe or worse turbulence each year, out of a total of more than 35 million journeys that currently occur around the world.

Severe turbulence is categorized as when the up and down movements of a jet going through unstable air apply more than 1.5g-force on your body - enough to throw you from your seat if you weren't wearing a seatbelt.

As global warming modifies atmospheric conditions, specialists caution that flying could become more turbulent: temperature changes and changing jet streams in the upper atmosphere are expected to increase the occurrence and strength of significant turbulence.
